D2D report - Bison takes 24th. Rone Jibs.

It was a perfect night, dry and not too cold - plenty of dust but you can't have everything. The course was a great improvement from last year being pretty much in reverse, no hills that I can remember.

We were both well rested from the Mary Towneley challenge three weeks before which turned out to be a beautiful day on the Rossendale Moors, with plenty of climbing in the legs. Even though I felt pretty slow on the day I seemed to ride the 47 mile loop in good time. This circular route forms part of the PB (not the Pig Brother Way) - the Pennine Bridleway that is, that starts in Cromford. There was 2000m of climbing and some fantastic views, definitely doing this next year.

Anyway, the D2D - we were both rested and fuelled up with a nice new Gazebo that survived the early wind (jokes about Bison's backside edited out.). At 19:50 we got to the start line and feeling pretty good I was fuelled up on super new crack-caffeine gels that I had been testing of the last year with scientists monitoring their performance and things were looking good. (That's a complete lie I'd not had one before.)

We were off; an initial mile to spread everyone out, Bison and I made our way to the first third of the pack and were riding with plenty to spare - about 12 av/s for the first couple of laps. There was a new Dry Pit-Stop for soloists with lighting which was fantastic as you could pull in and see all your food and tools. Also Heather Smalley and Andrea Moo were there looking after us and making tea between laps.

My three laps went without incident but I'd got a fantastic new creak on the bottom bracket of the bike - I decided to pull in on the third lap and perform a full clinical service on my BB - realising this would never work I got back on the bike for a forth. I'd not seen Bison yet although he thought he was in front of me - he has been known to be confused about such things.

My fourth was a dire turning point, still feeling full of energy my stomach started to hurt and I gave up on my well tested energy gels for two laps where I rode with the science of no food to see if I would recover - and I did - for the 5 & 6 lap I felt great without food but what could I eat now? My planning was so good I had plenty of backup food. Not.

The 7th lap was rubbish, I slowed right down due to science and Bison came passed me calling me a C*** and shouting - "Bananas, you need Bananas!" So I pulled back into the pit in the hope of one solitary Banana but the greedy swine had eaten them all. So I jibbed at that point feeling miserable. And to top it off I checked out placings, thinking we were about 60th - when in fact we were around 23/24th at that point.

Bison went on to complete the full 12hrs and finished 24th overall solo - a great effort, with me sulking in about 50 something place. Bison 113 miles, Rone 73 miles.

Thanks to Moo and Smalley for support.

Kielder 100 the aftermath ...

It might be prudent to read the race report from singletrack world.

www.singletrackworld.com/2009/09/kielder-100-a-racers-report/

My favourite line out of the report "One guy who’d given it his all to get to the first cut off said he was close to tears after missing it by only five minutes." Defo abbot.

A good ride, very tough. I came in at 13.5hrs which was plodding, but never got into my stride. Tom made a good ride too of 42 miles. You have to understand these miles were worth double local miles.

The organisation was fantastic, with some very remote marshalling and great way-marking. The highlight was riding over the border to the piper in the mist.

Kielder & Pennine Bridleway

This was the start of the 75mile >3100m Pennine Bridleway run that we made last Sunday. A very tough day, starting with nice sunshine at Middleton Top , and disintegrating into wind and rain by Diggle. This was a training ride for the forthcoming Kielder 100 - which Tom is also doing. Riding time 8.5hrs - out time including food and punctures 10hrs.

Events.

September and October are awash with events. First up is the Kielder 100 http://www.sip-events.co.uk/kielder-home.html . Tom, Bison and I go up there to try our hand at the first one hundred mile off-road event. Plenty of training in hand for this. Bison and I going for the first leg of the Pennine Bridleway this weekend if the weather is good.

With a couple of 90 miles off-road and loads of 60+ in our legs we are feeling confident that we will ride okay.

Also, the week after Kielder there is the http://www.idonohoe.com/mountian_bike9.htm Mary Towneley loop, a 47 mile section of the Pennine Bridleway - as an event. Sept 13th. This event plus the run up to there on the 71 mile section will give us the knowledge to do the whole loop soon.

Following these in October Bison and I are giving the D2D ago solo again.

STOP PRESS - On top of this, dark and white are running a "as many laps as possible" event at Sherwood Pines Oct 18th. http://www.darkandwhite.co.uk/challenge-events-outdoor-activities.asp?race_id=267 Sounds good and there is no excuse for any of us to not be there.

Then we will be in to trailquest season!

Not Mountain biking but ...

I know this isn't cycling but I thought I'd put the pics up anyway as it's the same region we've previously rode.

Trailquest on Sunday, weather looking good!

We stopped for a quick bit to eat, our first lunch of the day. Although there was plenty of mirth you have to admire the view. We managed to get to loads of resorts today across the portes du soleil. An absolute marathon.

Although Angus looks happy, he'd actually just put a waiter to rights who'd taken offence to us helping ourselves to water, after we spent 15 euros there. Suffice to say we didn't eat there.

Been here a day for angus/tims stag... Started on the slopes yesterday - very warm, nice clear sky and plenty of snow.

Everyone seems to be having a good time, Tims is the only one on a board and had some hilarious attempts on a button lift.

Matt is doing well on his first ski trip. Angus is well... what can you expect with a jacket embroided with english alpine team!

Will try and get more pics today.

Scotland - Kirroughtree

Okay I know it's not the most interesting pic, but i did ride the red route at Kirroughtree - amidst bouts of walking and eating.

I've ridden the black and red before; on the red something like 75% singletrack 350m of climbing. Virtually all of its 17km is properly surfaced and built to last with some very tricky rockery to ride.

Did it in 1hr 10mins, in quite wet weather Sat - late afternoon. A good local time is 1hr and I can see that being done easily - I asked about the best time and there is a Scottish Champion who trains there .... 42 mins apparently. Gulp.

There is a bike shop and cafe there too. I'm lucky enough to D&B&B in the actual forest which makes a fantastic base for walking and cycling.

The weather was pretty good on the whole with a fair bit of rain on Saturday and sunshine on the Sunday - makes the A1-A66-M6-A75 250 miles 4.5hr worth every penny - and it's a nice drive up. Hit a blizzard on the A66 coming home, as we were climbing the A66 it came down to little visability and settling snow but I could've managed with my CRV picnic table in the boot.

Work checking out nofussevents for some 10hr enduros during the summer including Kirroughtree park.

Spring in Feb

I can't believe we were riding in deep snow and ice last Sunday. This week was shirts and shorts.

Also, take a look at www.openadventure.com/ they've got some interesting adventure races lined up - including a C2C adventure race in August.

Wednesday 18 February 2009

All quiet on the Eastern front...

So, I'm rambling through my 'training plan' for early 2009. Hmmm.

I say, 'plan', but it changes almost weekly. I guess (importantly) getting out on the bike at all is better than nothing.

So only did 200 miles in Jan, when I wanted to hit more than that. Snow didn't help, but I've finally (since last week) cracked and started turbo training again. It's dull as anything, but again, is bettet than nothing and I've found a few training sets that make things a bit more interesting. Gonna use Turbo specifically to build strength.

Goal until end of April is to drop (some of) my fat gut and build a good base. Will see how that goes. Crying out for some longer rides though - that will be the next goal...assuming I'm not out drinking too much :)

Diet side is going fine. Hard as it is as times. Craving stuff during the day, but being good. Gotta be worth it long run. Feel better for it - but interesting how cutting back has affecting energy levels. So it's a balance. All that 'everthing in moderation' stuff is true.

So big '09 goal has to be the TransWales which I loved last year. Other than that, hope to do a few other things. See how it shapes up.

Need to get together with the guys for some riding. But we all have different levels of availability and flexibilty - so it works when it works. Plus I enjoy the riding alone. Much less complicated.

2008 ends with Dalby & Chips

2008 feels like a year of back-ache with bouts of decent riding; Alps in the summer, the new trails at Pines, the wet D2D, the epic 113 mile Lincoln plus ride - lots of solid memories.

To round the year off Bison and I ended up at Dalby on New Years Eve Eve and did the red route - quite challenging but plenty rideable. We finished the day at fish 'n chips shop in a nearby village.

It's been a strong December - with 327 miles of riding on my lap I feel like I've made use of the Christmas break and hope to come out of Winter with decent legs!

2009 for me is going to about properly sorting my back out (if I can) and lots of sub 3hr fast rides - with maybe the odd longer one thrown in. I also need to strip off some weight as my Wii fit is telling me I'm almost obese!
